Fred Moyer (Silver Lining Networks) analyzes why the San Francisco municipal wifi project failed:
"If you haven't yet heard the news, the much touted project to provide wireless internet access for the city of San Francisco dissolved last week when Earthlink backed out of the contract. This comes at the same time as Earthlink announced a cut of 900 jobs. The two events are almost certainly related, but I think that someone up high at Earthlink saw that they were slated to become committed to footing the bill for a massive infrastructure deployment for the wireless network, and that they might be looking at a repeat of what happened to the big telco companies around 1999-2001."
